Moving from one home to another is an almost guaranteed process for the urban dweller, at least once in their lives. We move for a number of reasons including changes in the economic status, new jobs, personal preferences, family sizes, unfortunate circumstances just to mention but a few. During the moving period, much help is required in packing, moving and unpacking household items from the old house to the new one.

Most people often hire professional movers to do the job for them to ensure everything goes smoothly. Some still prefer to go through the tedious process by themselves, perhaps enlisting a little extra help from a friend, colleague or neighbor. Here are a few moving tips you can pay attention to for a less stressful moving process:

A list comes in handy

It may sound obvious and unnecessary but making a list of all items packed goes a long way in ensuring organization and smooth transitioning. You can use Microsoft Excel or even word to create a table showing many fields including box numbers, marking pens, tapes and other supplies. Record the item on the computer each time you package it in a box or other kind of packaging material. A notebook can also do the job pretty fine.

Pre-clean the new house

Before the moving day, take some time (preferably one day before) to clean the new house and have it ready for you. Clear the dust off the shelves, cabinets, walls and other spaces and give it time to dry before placing items over them. You can also use this opportunity to clean the bathroom and begin by putting enough toiletries in case someone might need to use it during the moving day.

Organize well before enlisting help

You may want to have everything ready before asking friends and family members to help you move from one house to another. Ensure you purchase enough boxes, wrapping bags, cotton pads, box labels and other supplies you may require. If possible, you can go the extra mile and pack the items yourself marking each box as you go so that once the extra hands arrive, their work is simplified. They’ll help better when they notice some level of progress and organization from you.

Be strategic

When it comes to shifting household goods, strategy will keep you going. Try to be precise about what goes where, which packaging material is fit for what category of goods, which items can be packed first and so on. For instance, to avoid breakage of glass, make-up accessories and other delicates, you may want to use cotton pads, clothing, beer boxes, sandwich bags and saran wraps. Since there is a high possibility you may not finish unpacking everything during the first day of moving, you may also want to have a few items of use in a clear plastic bin for convenience.

Bring in the experts

For special cases where there are lots of fragile and valuable items, hiring moving experts may be a better option. You are better off spending more and being sure that your items are safe.

Moving doesn’t have to be a stressful affair as most people find it. With enough planning and strategy, it can actually be a fun activity for the whole family!
